National Electric Week kicks off - KEYT

GOLETA, Calif. - Thousands across the nation participated in the National Drive Electric Week which kicked off this weekend.

The city of Goleta joined in on the celebration where more than a dozen electric vehicles went on display at the Camino Real Marketplace on Saturday.

It's an effort to heighten awareness of today's widespread availability of plug-in vehicles.

"These are all volunteers. They are electric car drivers that want to talk to our neighbors and community members about electric cars and why other people should consider driving electric," said Michael Chiacos, a member of the Community Environmental Council.

Owners displayed their all-electric and plug-in hybrid electric cars.

"They use clean electricity. A lot of people have solar power at their homes so they can charge off of renewable energy," Chiacos said.

dave penn owns a Tesla Model S.

Penn's average gas bill used to up to $300 per month.

"It's now about $40 electric bill per month," Penn said.

Steve Ferry owns a Ford Focus electric car.
He said it ranges about 70 miles when fully charged and requires very little maintenance.

"I've had it for five years. It has been very inexpensive to run. I've spent $220 total on maintenance since that time," Ferry said.

The all-electric cars are also better for the environment, promote local jobs, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Penn hopes through mass production, the electric cars will become cheaper to purchase.

His Tesla cost him close to $100,000.

"It still justifies the expense with the cost of savings," Penn said.
