Bob McDonald will now be able to say that he’s sung the anthem during both a Stanley Cup Final and a World Series game in Washington, DC.
The longtime Washington Capitals anthem singer will sing the national anthem ahead of Game Five of the World Series. Chef and humanitarian Jose Andres will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. President Trump will also be in attendance.
“I’m really at a loss for words,” an emotional McDonald said in an interview.
The Nationals announced the news in a press release Saturday.
“I was asked mid-week and assumed since the bulk of what I have done with the Nationals has been with my beloved Army chorus, that it would be an Army quartet or the chorus,” McDonald said. “I then learned they were requesting me solo and I truly could not believe it. The Army Chorus quartet then sang America the Beautiful for Game Three, and the Army brass quintet will perform the anthem tonight for Game Four, so this is a thrill professionally and personally across the board.”
McDonald will be in uniform when he performs.
“I grew up as a die-hard sports fan in a town that didn’t have a baseball team,” McDonald added. “Like so many Washingtonians, I’ve been rooting and singing for the Nats since they first came to RFK in 2005. And I’ve been there for the highs and lows and the entire journey. And now here they are in the World Series. To be asked to sing for the World Series is an honor enough for a sports geek like me, but to be singing for my team in my home stadium is a dream come true. It is all only sweetened by coming on the heels of the Capitals’ Stanley Cup championship just two years ago. It’s been an amazing and wonderful ride for DC sports. I’d be happy to be part of it just as a fan, but the fact I can take part in a way that represents our country and all in uniform at the same time, makes it incredibly special and something I will never forget.”
