STODDARD, Wis. (WXOW) — National Prescription Drug Take Back Day kicks off on Saturday, and Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul along with State Senator Jennifer Shilling and Vernon County Deputy Roy Torgerson held a news conference to discuss the importance of this day.
Kaul spoke about the ongoing battle in the state with prescription opioid addiction along with a booming demand for meth in northern and western Wisconsin.
“One of the main ways that people become addicted to opioids is the diversion of unwanted and unused medication,” said Kaul. “People across the state can help make their communities safer by preventing diversion and making sure those unused medications are disposed of properly.”
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day happens twice a year, once in fall and once in spring. Typically, thousands of pounds of medication is collected during each event.
It’s an opportunity for people to properly dispose of household prescriptions, over the counter medications, liquids in original containers, and pet medications. The more people can help with the disposal of prescription drugs, the fewer children, animals, and addicts can get their hands on them.
“People in recovery should know that those of us in law enforcement want them to succeed with their recovery,” said Kaul. “We want to work to reduce overdose deaths, work to reduce addiction and one way that they [people] can help if they have unused and unwanted medications just like others is by disposing of those at drug take back day.”
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, improper disposal of expired or unused prescription drugs has been shown to cause damage to the environment and threatens drinking water. Do not flush medication down the toilet.
In Vernon County, you can drop your unwanted prescriptions at Westby Police Department, Hillsboro Police Department, Stoddard Village Hall, Viola Police Department, and Coon Valley Police Department from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
