The National Weather Service office in Springfield reported a tornado on the ground near the intersection of Highways 125 and OO just west of Strafford at 5:56 p.m.
"Take cover now!" officials tweeted.
Officials said a tornado warning continued for Strafford, Fair Grove and Elkland until 6:15 p.m.
Around 6:30 p.m., officials warned residents to remain vigilant if they were located east of town: "Severe weather threat has ended from Springfield and points west," National Weather Service Springfield tweeted.
"Severe threat continues east of US Highway 65."
Earlier, residents of southwest Missouri counties including Greene and Taney reported strong winds and large hail.
Flash flood warnings were issued for Neosho, Bolivar and Monett until 2 a.m.
Flash flood warnings for Fort Leonard Wood, Lebanon and Branson were in effect until 12:45 a.m.
A flash flood warning was in effect until 11:30 p.m. in the following locations, according to the National Weather Service:

- Southeastern Benton County in central Missouri...
- Miller County in central Missouri...

- Southern Morgan County in central Missouri...
Flash flood warnings were also in effect for Springfield, Nixa and Ozark until 1
Severe thunderstorm warnings for Lebanon, Camdenton, Hartville, Mountain Grove, Mansfield, Norwood and Seymour were in effect until 7:15 p.m.
Other severe thunderstorm warnings including Branson, Hollister and Ava were in effect until 6:45 p.m.
Around 6:15 p.m., CU Transit said delays were possible with Springfield city buses Friday night.
"Please be patient this evening," CU Transit tweeted. "With flash flooding on some streets and severe weather, buses may be running late."
Early Friday evening, the Missouri State Highway Patrol warned the public to take precautions this weekend while out on the roads.
"Now through Saturday night, Missouri could experience everything from tornadoes, heavy rains, flooding, ice, and snow," read an MSHP social media post. "Check your local weather and the MoDOT Map before you travel."
