A winter storm is ongoing across southern Minnesota Sunday morning and is expected to be mostly over and done with by midday. But the National Weather Service made adjustments to the forecast in the middle of the night, boosting snow totals slightly and adding Minneapolis and St. Paul to the winter storm warning.
To be clear: The weather service says Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington counties were added to the winter storm warning, but the warning is mainly for the southern half of each county, where snow totals could reach 6-8 inches compared to 2-4 inches in the northern half of each county. That's indicative of a very sharp snowfall gradient associated with the storm.
To the snow totals, which were boosted in the southern suburbs and across southwest, south-central and southeast parts of the state, where 8-12 inches could be tallied up by the time it's all said and done.
The best chance for a foot of snow, according to the NWS, is from Canby to Redwood Falls, Mankato and Rochester.
Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour could continue this morning in the heaviest bands of snow, and thunder snow remains possible. Cloud-to-ground lightning was detected near Owatonna earlier this morning.
"A tight gradient will exist on the edges of this band, with more uncertainty in snowfall amounts across these areas. This gradient will be pronounced across the Twin Cities metro, with amounts of 6-8" expected across the south metro and 2-4" across the north metro," the NWS Twin Cities said.
As of early Sunday morning, 10 inches had already been reported in Minneota (southwest MN), with 7-9 inches in the Mankato area.
