How you can celebrate National Women's History Month in the Southern Tier - WBNG-TV

(WBNG) -- As National Women's History month kicks off around the country, here in the Southern Tier, the celebrations are about to begin.

On Monday March 2 at 1 p.m. at Binghamton City Hall, the Status of Women Council will hold a flag raising ceremony.

The annual tradition will see the flag wave throughout the entire month of March in recognition of women's achievements and legacies throughout Broome County and the nation.

The council's president Heather Micha told 12 News the month is important to help women get the recognition they deserve.

"Women are unseen and unnoticed, so it's important to have that recognition, that pride and that honor to show what we have done," Micha said. "There are still women today who are trying to break the glass ceiling."

As the month-long celebration goes on, Micha gave advice for how people at home can honor the women who have impacted their lives.

"Your wife or your mom, just give them a hug and thank them for their contribution, even if it's toward your family," Micha said. "Just little acts of kindness go a long way."
