WORCESTER — Lt. Jason Menard, the city firefighter who died from injuries suffered in a Nov. 13 fire at 7 Stockholm St., will been posthumously awarded the 2020 Ray Downey Courage & Valor Award.
The national award, established to honor a firefighter whose actions deserve national recognition, is named for Deputy Chief Ray Downey of the Fire Department of New York, who died on Sept. 11, 2001, according to Fire Engineering, a fire and emergency services trade publication.
Menard was chosen as the recipient of the award, which is presented annually at the Fire Department Instructors Convention opening ceremony, for his actions to push Firefighter Christopher Pace out a window to safety. Pace was badly hurt but survived.
“For his extraordinary display of courage, valor, and extreme bravery at the fire in which he lost his life, Lt. Jason Menard is the recipient of the 2020 Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award.”
The prestigious award’s selection committee includes members of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation; the National Fire Academy Alumni Association; Downey’s two sons; and representatives of Fire Engineering.
The award includes a Courage and Valor medal and $35,000. The annual firefighting conference will be held April 20-25.
