Crews slowed the spread of a fire in the Angeles National Forest that threatened to scorch dozens of acres north of Altadena on Sunday, Sept. 22.
Flames were reported devouring light to medium brush near the Loma Alta and Chaney Trails at about 3:30 p.m., Angeles National Forest Service officials said. The Lowe fire had scorched about 10 acres by 4:30 p.m., officials said. It did not grow any larger Sunday evening, but earlier had the potential to burn as much as 100 acres of forest land.

Forest service officials later commented on Twitter: “Per incident commander, the majority of the forward progress has been stopped. Resources are continuing to build containment line and suppress remaining active flame.”
The fire was 40 percent contained as of 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Angeles National Forest spokesman Nathan Judy said.
The nearby Millard campground was evacuated, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Altadena Station said on social media. Hikers were being escorted out of the fire area, and no injuries were immediately reported.

No structures were ever threatened, and no injuries had been reported as of Sunday evening, Judy said.
The Sheriff’s Department said on social media that the Millard campground and the Chaney and Mt. Lowe Truck trails would be closed, perhaps through Wednesday.
About 300 firefighters from the Angeles National Forest and the Los Angeles County Fire Department were dispatched to battle the fire. Six planes and seven helicopters attacked the fire from the sky as it generated a column of smoke visible from miles away.
It wasn’t immediately known how the fire started.
In La Cañada Flintridge, resident Lewis Chilton saw helicopters at a nearby helipad gathering water to drop on the fire.

Looks like a fire in the mountains seen from the Dodger game. Not sure exactly where that is… maybe above Altadena? pic.twitter.com/NAZDMpOqmE
