Michael GoldsteinIf you weren’t able to get to the wilds of Nevada for the #area51 celebrations, you’ll have another chance to get outside next weekend. And if you head to a nearby National Park or other national public land, the price is right: free!
Every year, on the fourth Saturday of September (this year that’s September 28), the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation (NPF), the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service (NPS), celebrate National Public Lands Day. The NPF says National Public Lands Day is the largest single-day volunteer event for public lands in the US.
The NPS would be delighted if you went to work on National Public Lands Day as a volunteer, to help with important items like trail restoration, removing invasive plants and cleaning up the park.
But if you don’t feel like working for free, and just want to enjoy a national park on fee free day, why not? While not all of the 419 US National Parks charge admission, fees at the 112 that do can be pretty stiff. At Yosemite in California, for example, the entrance fee is$35 per vehicle or $30 per motorcycle.
If you go to a National Park on September 28, not only will your experience be priceless, you’ll get to escape from the awfulness of urban life to the paradise of the parks, according to this amusing video from the National Parks Foundation.
To find the park nearest you (the NPF claims that for most Americans, there’s a National Park within an hour’s drive, try the handy #FindYourPark/#EncuentraTuParque park finder.
And while the price is free on September 28, whenever you go, you will find value in visiting.
