A driver wanted for a couple of traffic violations in National City led police on a nearly 40-minute pursuit at speeds of 120 mph at times before crashing and getting arrested on Interstate 15 in Rancho Bernardo on Saturday.
Authorities had all northbound freeway lanes closed for almost 10 minutes while they got the driver into custody, according to a Caltrans tweet.
Officers stayed on the tail of a red Hyundai Sonata through Paradise Hills in San Diego, onto state Route 125 through La Mesa, then west on Interstate 8 through Mission Valley before turning north.
The Sonata driver crashed into the back of a van at 4:12 p.m. just south of Camino del Norte. Surrounded by officers with guns drawn, he complied with orders to get out of the car and surrender quietly, according to police heard on a radio scanner.

A National City officer first tried to pull over the driver for two unspecified traffic violations around 3:35 p.m., then went into pursuit when the driver sped off.
Officers in the pursuit described the driver as going up to 80 mph on city streets and at times exiting the various freeways, then getting back on. A sheriff’s helicopter crew caught up to the Hyundai by the time it was on I-8 westbound, but had to break off going north on I-15 to stay out of the Miramar Air Show’s air space.
The California Highway Patrol was notified of the freeway crash to conduct an investigation within its jurisdiction. Neither the Hyndai driver nor the people in the van were injured in the collision, a National City police sergeant told OnScene TV.
