Pedestrian hit, killed on freeway in National City - The San Diego Union-Tribune

A pedestrian was hit and killed while walking on Interstate 805 near state Route 54 in National City on Sunday night, authorities said.

The pedestrian, who had been walking in freeway lanes, was hit by two vehicles around 6 p.m. on northbound I-805 at SR-54, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said. The drivers involved in the collision stopped after the crash.

A second collision involving two different vehicles occurred about 25 minutes later in the backup of the freeway, according to a CHP log.

A traffic alert was issued around 6:30 p.m. and several lanes of the freeway were shut down as the fatal crash was investigated.

As of 9 p.m., a several lanes between state Route and Plaza Boulevard remained closed, as were connectors from eastbound and westbound SR-54 to northbound I-805, officials said. The Sweetwater Road onramp to northbound I-805 also was closed.
