Berkeley Prep has its chances vs. West Virginia power in National Hoopfest - Tampa Bay Times

TAMPA — A year ago, Berkeley Prep nearly pulled off the upset, losing to national power Huntington St. Joseph Prep of West Virginia.

On Friday, the Buccaneers had another crack at the premier program, one that boasts five players already committed or signed to major Division I-A programs.

That did not faze Berkeley Prep, which once again stood-toe-to-toe with Huntington Prep at the annual National Hoopfest.

In the first half, the Buccaneers jumped out to a 21-14 lead thanks in large part to the shooting of Kegan Karnes, who was 4-of-5 from 3-point range. And RJ Garcia, who hit a last-second shot to beat Anclote two weeks ago, continued to deliver in the clutch, this time knocking down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.

But it was not enough. Huntington Prep used size and skill to its advantage in a 71-68 win.

Still, the Buccaneers (17-4) had their chances. Karnes and Garcia both missed shots in the final seconds that would have sent the game into another overtime. Karnes, who finished 6-of-8 from 3-point range, led all scorers with 32 points. Teammate CJ Hawkins added 19.

Cornerstone Christian 71, St. Petersburg 45: Green Devils coach Chris Blackwell was not upset that his team lost on the opening night of the National Hoopfest. He was frustrated by the lack of effort in defeat.

“We were just going through the motions out there,” Blackwell said.

St. Petersburg (16-7) trailed the Texas school in every quarter. Part of that was the inability to create second chances. The Green Devils were out-rebounded 45-28.

Rivers Lenholt (19 points) and Deon Earley (14) led the Green Devils in scoring.

Montverde 79, IMG 73: After trailing for most of the first half, Montverde was able to get into a rhythm to pull away in a battle of post-graduate programs. Anwar Gill had 28 points for Montverde to lead all scorers.
