Curling: Shuster wins fifth national title - Duluth News Tribune

Defending champion John Shuster outlasted Rich Ruohonen 8-6 to win his fourth USA Curling National Championship in the past six years Saturday night in Spokane, Washington.

Shuster stole a point in the 10th end to expand his one-point lead and clinch a berth in the World Men’s Championship from March 28-April 5 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Shuster, a Chisholm native and Superior resident, and teammates Chris Plys and John Landsteiner (both of Duluth) and Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.) went unbeaten in 11 tournament matches.

Shuster, the 2018 Winter Olympics gold-medal winning skip, now has five national titles to surpass the four won by legendary Superior curler Bud Somervile.

Peterson and Geving, along with teammates Becca Hamilton and Tara Peterson, will represent the U.S. at the women’s worlds March 14-22 in Prince George, British Columbia.
