Flames scorched about a half-acre of vegetation Wednesday night in an overgrown patch of southeastern National City near Interstate 805 and the Plaza Bonita mall, authorities said.
The fire was reported around 8:20 p.m. in an undeveloped riverbed area between I-805, Plaza Bonita Road and Bonita Road, according to a National City Fire Department battalion chief. The thick, brushy area southwest of Westfield Plaza Bonita is often used as a homeless encampment.
By 9 p.m., there were no more visible flames, and a dispatcher wrote in a California Highway Patrol log that firefighters “seem like they have it contained.”
National City Battalion Chief Mark Beveridge told OnScene TV that firefighters from his city, Chula Vista and San Diego all responded.

“We also had one helicopter drop from (a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department helicopter) that actually took a lot of heat out of the fire for us,” Beverdige told OnScene TV.
Authorities shut down some northbound I-805 lanes, as well as part of Bonita Road and its on-ramp to north I-805, according to the Highway Patrol.
It was unclear how the blaze started, but Beveridge said the area has a known homeless population. He said firefighters working to mop up the blaze were dealing with “very thick, heavy brush,” as well as “some big trees and quite a bit of debris.”
The fire broke out near the end of a nervy day for San Diego County in which hot, arid conditions and Santa Ana winds had created critical fire danger.
