Dozens of members of the Maryland National Guard shipped out Saturday for Europe.The guard members will deploy to Poland as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a mission that supports U.S. allies abroad.Lt. Boyd Rutherford and Baltimore Mayor Jack Young were both on hand to send the troops off.This is the first time a National Guard unit is joining the mission and a Maryland guardsman said it's a big honor."It's bittersweet. You know, there's an excitement to the professional growth and the job opportunities that you're going to have, but there's also the sadness of leaving behind family and that's the challenge that National Guard soldiers have that have to deal with that active duty doesn't always have. They're cemented in their communities, they have their civilian lives here at home," Maryland National Guard Capt. Ryan Lundregan said.The soldiers will join thousands of other American forces serving in Operation Atlantic Resolve.
