Coronavirus update: National City - The San Diego Union-Tribune

National City had to close public restrooms in parks because people were stealing toilet paper, despite the fact that locks secured the rolls in the toilet paper holders.

How they did it, remains a mystery.

“Necessity is the mother of ingenuity,” said Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis.

That is just one of the many ways that the COVID-19 outbreak has impacted the lives of National City’s residents.

According to county health officials, there are five confirmed COVID-19 cases in National City.

In response to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s directive to stay at home, the city suspended most operations except for police, fire, public works and some building inspections that have to do with safety.

That means all public buildings, recreation centers and libraries are closed.

But parks – including the skate park and dog parks – are still open. At least partially.

People can walk, run and ride a bike around the parks as long as they continue to adhere to social distancing guidelines by maintaining a 6-foot distance from other people and large groups do not congregate.

“People have been very respectful and cognizant of the rules here,” Sotelo-Solis said. “We really haven’t seen the type of crowds that the trails and beaches have seen.”

Even though people can go to parks, some amenities are off-limits. Residents are not allowed to use public restrooms, playgrounds or congregate in soccer fields and basketball courts, the mayor added.

Pepper Park, which is on land managed by the Port of San Diego, is closed. The Port announced the closure of all its waterfront parks Tuesday.

National City has also made it a priority to ensure residents stay fed during the state of emergency.

The city is still serving grab-and-go meals to seniors at the Senior Nutrition Center and is even offering a home delivery meal program. The meals are available to seniors for a suggested donation of $3.50.

Additionally, the city partnered with Feed San Diego to give free lunches to children. On Monday at the Casa de Salud Youth Center, volunteers handed out 80 meals.

“We are very proud of this partnership,” the mayor said.

The National School District is also stepping up to give children free meals through at least April 3, according to the district’s website.

City officials have been constantly coordinating with county health officials throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. To make sure the community remains updated on the latest information, the city has made it a priority to push out news updates through its website and social media platforms.

“Information is power and we want to empower our community by giving them the latest information,” Sotelo-Solis said.

Officials in National City said that, for the most part, residents are staying home and complying with social distancing guidelines.

“We have a pretty tight-knit community and we are all kind of watching out for each other,” Sotelo-Solis said.

The mayor added that her and her husband have used the extra time at home to finally finish home improvement projects they’ve been putting off for years.
