US Junior National Team beats Russia to move atop group - Duluth News Tribune

The U.S. National Junior Team and head coach Scott Sandelin climbed to the top of the Group B standings Sunday at the World Junior Championship with a 3-1 victory over Russia in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Arthur Kaliyev scored twice for Team USA and goaltender Spencer Knight made 25 saves. Nick Robertson also scored for the Americans, who wrap up preliminary round play at noon Monday against the host Czech Republic.

The U.S. jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Russians finally answered, scoring almost a minute and a half after Kaliyev got his second early in the third.

“Our guys did what they need to do, we had some big shot blocks and a few key saves,” said Sandelin, the Hibbing native and Minnesota Duluth head coach. “Our guys competed hard and really sacrificed, and that’s what we need to do.”

Sunday was the Americans’ fifth consecutive win over Russia in the World Juniors tournament.

Canada tops U-18 women

The Bulldogs’ Maura Crowell and her U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team lost their preliminary round finale to rival Canada 2-1 on Sunday at the Under-18 Women’s World Championship in Bratislava, Czech Republic.

Both the Americans and Canadians still received byes to the semifinal round, which takes place on Wednesday. Opponents have yet to be determined.

"It was another great battle against Canada," said Crowell, head coach of Team USA and the Bulldogs. "They got the faster start there, but I liked the way we settled in. I'm excited for the next one and we'll see what happens down the stretch here.”

U.S. goaltender and Minnesota recruit Skylar Vetter of Lakeville, Minn., made 36 saves and Shattuck-St. Mary’s forward Lacey Eden scored the lone U.S. goal late in the third period.

Canada took a 1-0 lead just 20 seconds into the game and went ahead by two goals five and a half minutes into the third period.
