SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A major announcement today concerning higher education in the South Bay. For the first time, UC San Diego will have a presence there.
Tuesday by unanimous vote, the National City City Council voted to create a partnership with UCSD involving an education and workforce hub for the South Bay region, site still to be determined.
The letter-of-intent is the first step in the process which involves the UC San Diego Extension. The university’s extension arm was created so that, as one university official says, the school isn’t just a “campus in La Jolla on a hill.”
We should also note that the university is involved in such a hub in downtown San Diego’s East Village neighborhood.
But it’s a huge step to have one in National City, preparing students for college when many of those students and or their families don’t always appreciate educational opportunities beyond high school.
Officials say the hub could be up and running in less than six months.
